Driving forces of CO2 emissions in the G20 countries: An index decomposition analysis from 1971 to 2010
نویسندگان
چکیده
The G20, a grouping of the largest developed and developing economies in the world, accounts for 7 almost 86% of global Gross Domestic Product and 76% of global CO2 emissions. In recent years, the G20 global 8 summit has not only aimed to support an economic agenda, but also to coordinate actions towards a cleaner energy 9 and low-carbon future. However, in different countries driving forces for the change in CO2 emissions may vary 10 due to being at different stages in their development and on different development pathways. Due to their 11 increasing share in global greenhouse gas emissions, emerging economies are likely to play a more important role 12 in the future to promote multi-level cooperation on key issues, especially in mitigating climate change. Therefore, a 13 better understanding of driving forces of each country’s change in CO2 emissions is essential to tackle global 14 climate change and to develop a broadly acceptable agenda for climate change mitigation. Using index 15 decomposition analysis, this study aims to identify the main driving forces of CO2 emissions in the G20 countries. 16 The results show that the driving forces of CO2 emissions are significantly different in advanced economies versus 17 emerging economies. In general, economic growth was the main factor for increasing CO2 emissions. Apart from 18 economic growth, population growth shows the strongest effect on CO2 emissions growth in the emerging 19 economies such as Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, Turkey, and Argentina. This growth in emissions was partly 20 compensated by improved energy efficiency and reduced carbon intensity in most advanced economies and some 21 emerging economies, whereas in other G20 countries, such as France, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and Saudi 22 Arabia, energy intensity was increasing. Our results imply that different countries require different policies to do 23 justice to the differences in trajectories and factors influencing CO2 emissions. 24

متن کاملDecomposition and Analysis of Driving Forces of GHG Emissions and Emission Reduction Potentials in Iran
Climate change cannot control unless by reduction of GHG emissions to secure level, therefore it is important to identify driving forces and possible scenarios based on targets. In this research, the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index decomposition approach in combination with Extended Kaya Identity (EKI) are applied to investigate five factors could affect emissions during 1971-2012 in Iran. Thes...
متن کاملThe Effects of Economic, Financial and Political Developments on Iran’s CO2 Emissions
This study examines dynamic interrelationships and causality relationships among CO2 emissions, economic, political and financial variables over the period of 1971-2011 for the case of Iran as one of the top CO2 emitting countries in the world. The results of ARDL and Johansen cointegration approaches confirm the existence of long run relationship among CO2 emissions, energy consumption, GDP, f...
متن کاملEstimation of greenhouse gases emissions from urban traffic: a case study of Hamadan city
Background and Objective: Transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) which causes global warming. “Stop-and-go” driving and congested traffic flow results in a decrease in average car speeds, an increase in traffic incidents, and finally escalates GHGs emissions. Hence, congestion is directly related to carbon emissions. The objective of this stu...

This study compares the energy intensity performance in Indonesia to other south-east Asia countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, The Philippines and Malaysia for the period from 1971 to 2016. For this goal, this research employs a multiplicative Log Mean Divisia Index II method and Spatial-Temporal Index Decomposition Analysis. The manufacturing sector and commercial sector played a k...
